I Want to be a Falconer

Calling all bird experts and fanatics! Falcons are one of North America's most prized birds. According to Allaboutbirds.org, the largest falcon known to North America is the Peregrine Falcon. The Peregrine Falcon is a crow-sized, dark-feathered bird that resides along both coasts of the United States. They love to perch high atop tall towers or cliffs and spot their prey from afar.

Camp Seoul knows all about birds, especially when it comes to the Peregrine and other species of falcons. Did you know?; because these birds are experts at spotting and catching their prey from an aerial view, they have their very own hunting technique called "stooping." Our falcon experts shared that falcons are most desirable for population and behavioral control amongst their prey.

Our camp quickly turned into a fun-fact-sharing time about falcons and falconers. As the discussion grew, so did everyone's knowledge about falcons and their importance to our ecosystems. Falconers, or humans who control falcons, eagles, hawks, and owls, will possess the birds to relocate or hunt pest-bird species and wildlife, such as pigeons, seagulls, starlings, and sparrows. This extermination and relocation technique is imperative to the survival of nature and the success of our agriculture.

Here's the good news: you can begin to train as a falconer when you're twelve years of age! It's enjoyable to see our kids share their unique interests with others, which eventually evolves into a united revelation of knowledge. Is your camper an aspiring falconer, too?
