Happy Harvest
“中秋节快乐!” “お月見 (おつきみ)!” “ 즐거운 추석 되세요!”
Many Asian cultures celebrate this holiday in a variety of ways. Above are some popular greetings that Chinese, Japanese, and Korean speakers will welcome others during an eventful holiday called the Mid-Autumn or Full Moon Festival. For English speakers, you can think of this holiday as similar to a time of Thanksgiving.
To honor old traditions, some families will observe the Mid-Autumn Festival give thanks for harvesting rice and other essential crops grown over the year. Other participants might light lanterns, show appreciation to the full moon, spend time with family, eat mooncakes, and tell stories of ancient legends.
On September 21st, 2021, many campers in our TaleTree community observed the Mid-Autumn Festival. It was great to see how our campers who do not celebrate the holiday learned and respected their friends’ stories.
A strong sense of community amongst our campers provides a safe and welcoming environment- even in times of need. After the recent typhoon in the Phillippines, campers outside the area were worried about the well-being of their online friends. Many campers had heard the news and expressed their empathetic concern about the possible conditions that their friends might be in after various power outages.
In times of both joy and angst, the campers are always learning a plethora of information. As they learn about different communities and cultures, children will grow cultural and emotional knowledge and develop their ability to create and maintain friendships.
Happy Holidays to everyone who celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival last week! If you are just now learning about this holiday, will you be celebrating next year?
