Protect the Planet
How Can We Help?
This week, we spent some time during the camps talking to the kids about the changes that are taking place on Earth. Many of them were already aware of a lot of it, but had sadly told us they do not learn much about it at school. Because of this, Sumi took some time to inform them of some of the things that are going on. She did not do this to scare them, but to make them aware of the world around them. She especially did this because we know how much they love animals. She explained that many animals are endangered, and it is up to us to prevent the endangerment of more species. The more we know about our planet, the more we as individuals will want to help. There are so many ways we can help; the list goes on forever. Here are some examples that do not cause you to make major changes to your life: turn off lights when they are not in use, recycle, unplug devices once they are charged, turn off the water when brushing your teeth, try to eat more vegetables instead of so much meat and fish, grow your own crops, and reuse old things to make new ones! These are all simple steps you can take in your daily life. If we all work towards making these changes, we will slowly begin to help better the planet. It may be hard to be aware of all of these, but focus on one at a time. Once it becomes a habit, then you can try to focus on another thing.
Something we always remind the kids of at TaleTree is that no one can be good at everything, but everyone can always try their best. It is important to do the things you love, and start out with those that come easy to you. Once you get more comfortable, then you can challenge yourself, and take on harder tasks. This doesn’t only apply to helping the planet, but it applies to everything. Whether it is trying a new sport, learning a new art style, writing a song, learning to skate, etc. The options are limitless. As long as you set your mind to it, you will find that you are capable of doing a lot more than you thought.
Line Drawing
Have you seen examples of line drawing? Sasha showed us a line drawing she made in her art class during camp the other day. A tip she shared was that you make some dots first and then draw those lines. Now you can try it yourself!
Balance Objects or Yourself?
Balancing things is pretty difficult to do but once you learn the basics, you will just need to practice with different materials. Can you collect 4-5 rocks or other objects and try your balancing structure?
Learning Animal Series #3- Tapir
Have you ever heard about tapirs? They are herbivores that are relatives of rhinos. There are 5 species of tapirs in the world. They love to swim. What else do you know about them? Show us a few fun facts about them!
Three Favorite Sounds
I don't like upset people yelling or the sound of a car honking. Do you? I do love the sounds of owls' hooting and ocean waves though. Close your eyes and imagine the sounds you love. What are the top three sounds you love? Can you draw those three things that make your favorite sounds?
Celebration With A Piñata
In each country, there is at least one thing people do to celebrate birthdays. For example, people make and eat seaweed soup in Korea for birthdays. In Mexico and the U.S., kids break a piñata, a container filled with candy. Can you make a fun piñata yourself? Or if you have another tradition for birthdays, show us!
