A Haunting Holiday

A Halloween sight

Goblins and monsters

Masquerade in the moonlight

Halt at the graveyards

Where the Specter's eyes scour

If you’re spotted;

They’ll ensure eternal slumber

Before the final dance of the hour

Alarm! A partygoers cackle

Ring like the shackles

Of the unearthed debacle

Flee from the dance of the dead! Sprint far from the sight!

This dance is no treat for mortals

Whom tango in daylight

Unless you deceive

The dead in their dance

Say goodbye to human deserts, delights, and romance

You did not heed my warning

Captivated by the sight

It is too late to run away

In the thick dark of night

Why didn’t you run?

When you had the chance?

You are cordially invited

To the graveyard dance

For many of us, Halloween is here! Our celebrating campers are excited about the holiday’s festivities.

Wouldn’t it be strange if you knocked on your neighbor’s door and asked them for candy? In many Western states and cities, asking your neighbors for candy is normal, but only on October 31st, or, Halloween! Halloween is a time for the youth to dress up as their favorite princesses, superheroes, villains, book characters, or role models. On Halloween night, the youth, often chaperoned with families or parents, will parade around their neighborhoods and endeavor on the hunt to fill their buckets and goody bags with loads of candy! If you’re lucky, maybe your Trick-or-treater won’t need to ask you for candy for the rest of the year.

It is wonderful how much joy our campers show when they talk about Halloween. What is it about having a special day to play pretend, gather with friends and family, and hunt for candy? Surely, this can be much more than a silly day to play dress up. Perhaps, Halloween can be a time to be self-expressive and show the world a dramatic character- something unique and fun that kids don’t often get to share with others. What do you want your Halloween character to say about you this year?
