Measuring creativity?
We’ve asked our kids if they think we can measure creativity and if yes, how. When we were giving out that challenge, we were very curious what our kids would say. It’s a question that’s hard for even adults to answer. Guess what. Their answers just wowed us! This 7-year old boy, Dylan, came up with incredibly smart thoughts - “We can’t measure creativity like heights and weights. Creativity doesn’t have a correct number. Everyone’s creativity is special”. Exactly!
Other kids came up with some visual abstraction of their understanding of creativity. Lots of colors in different shapes, fueling the brain with multiple colors, accepting “anything”, trying out things over and over, think about the value it creates…..all of them make total sense. We couldn’t believe how deep these kids understanding of this very abstract concept is.
Lots of scholars and researchers have been trying to figure out some ways to measure creativity. This effort will probably continue, but look at our kids. They instinctively understand and practice that in their day-to-day life. Let them be! Let them explore their world of imagination. They are so much more powerful in the realm of creativity :)
