Pink Land & Tomato Galaxy

This week, many kids expressed their thoughtful creativity through food. Ihwan’s simple drawing of a bright red lobster was especially thoughtful, as he expressed that he would like to send it to his dad who is in Korea while he is in Canada. It has been so inspiring and encouraging to see moments of deep reflection in our kids for the people they love. Some kids designed posters for recipes while others experimented by cooking recipes in the kitchen. These are all wonderful moments for them to express not only creativity with one another during the Camp sessions but also to transform it into inspiration, empathy, and curiosity for different experiences.

Sometimes, the conversations that arise during Camp sessions begin to revolve around otherworldly experiences. Kaylie from our Sydney group created a “Pink Land” where all things are pink to express how her most favorite color makes her feel. As she shared about this imaginary land, the entire Camp session became an opportunity for the kids to imagine new worlds, characters, and environments for not only Kaylie’s Pink Land but also for their own creations as well, including Rainbow Land and Tomato Galaxy!. Story-building and storytelling amongst one another while observing each others’ creations is another kind of creativity that these kids utilize so seamlessly. It shows just how expressive and reflective they can be through so many different ways!

As the kids work on this week’s challenges, we encourage parents to engage in conversation about your child’s creative process in hopes of solidifying and diversifying their overall experience with the Camp sessions. Consider these open-ended questions below as conversation starters:

  • Why did you choose to use this material?

  • What would happen if I added too much of _______ ingredient/material?

  • Which area of your creation is the most important?

  • What is the title of your creation? What does it mean?

  • How would you feel if you lived inside your creation?

  • What else can this material/creation be used for?
