Sharing Celebrations
With the holidays approaching, a challenge from this week’s selection encouraged our Creative Camp kids to invent a new holiday. With this challenge came a lot of interesting responses! Our kids dreamt up holidays like Liber Day and Public Library Day for avid readers, Toy Day for our knick-knack loving kiddos, Spend Time With Your Family Day. and even a Dog Day!
As we discussed these made-up holidays, we had many important talks about how people celebrate different holidays in reality. While some holidays like Halloween are fun-loving and encourage dressing up, others remind us to reflect on honoring, respecting, and being grateful for loved ones. It’s important to notes that there are many holidays we may not know of but it becomes all the more wonderful to share them with each other in an effort to gain new knowledge and consideration for other cultures. Learning about different holidays even teaches our camp kids about food culture, traditional fashion garments, and festive ceremonies.
By glimpsing into each others’ worlds through the sharing of different holidays, our Creative Camp kiddos obtain better insight about customs and traditions outside of their own lived experiences that allow them to learn the value of genuineness, authenticity, and empathy.
Which of these holidays stands out to you? Try celebrating Spend Time With Your Family Day!
