Similarities and Differences

Have you ever noticed how you and your friends can be both similar and different at the same time? It is like having your favorite ice cream flavors – some of you might love chocolate, while others favorite flavor may be vanilla. Just like that, you and your friends might have things in common, like loving the same games or enjoying the same books. But guess what? It is also super cool to have differences. The topic of similarities and differences came up during camp this week when we were talking about a book. Two of our campers, Ruby and Seah, are very close friends, and they love doing camp together. Seah absolutely loves the book called “Wings of Fire,” while Ruby does not care for it. This showed that even though they get along well and have very many similarities, they can also have differences. The differences can actually bring them closer together because it allows for them to learn more about one another and why they make like or dislike something.

Imagine your friend loves painting but you are into soccer. Instead of thinking, "Oh no, we're not the same," you can say, "Tell me more about why you love painting!" That way, you will learn something new and maybe even find a new hobby you enjoy together. So remember, it's not just the similarities that make friendships fun – the differences can be pretty awesome too!

Another way we can think about it is by thinking about a puzzle. Your favorite puzzle is made up of a lot of different pieces, right? Well, friendships are kind of like that puzzle. Each friend adds their own special piece, which might be different from yours, but when you put them all together, you create an amazing picture. Sometimes, the best conversations come from those differences. You might be surprised to find out why your friend loves something you have never even thought about! So, whether you are a fan of adventure or mysteries, superheroes or unicorns, remember that it is the mix of similarities and differences that makes your friendships unique and exciting. Embrace those differences, chat about them, and it will allow you to create so many memories!
