Art Is Subjective

What is Art?

We love this question because there is no right answer. Many of the kids tend to compare their artwork to others in their camps, or they say what they created is not good, but we continuously remind them that art is subjective. This means that art can quite literally be anything you want it to be, and that it is going to be interpreted by all people in different ways. Art is fun because it can be interpreted so differently, and this is something the kids really enjoy. They all love to guess what their friends created, or create a story to back it up. A lot of the times the kids do not have a story to go with what they created, they just simply drew whatever they were thinking. It is really engaging when other kids come up with a story based on the creation they see, and how the artists of that piece can further add onto the story.

When showing them our special camp guest’s artwork, they all had different thoughts about it. His artwork goes to show that art is subjective, and that it can consist of anything. His pieces are very abstract, and some kids said they found it kind of creepy, while others thought it was really cool.

Big Talkers

As soon as we all log onto the camps, the kids always have so much to say. They are always super excited to share what they did since the last time we saw them, and they love hearing what their friends have to say. The best part about hearing their stories is that they often draw what they hear. For example, Sumi was talking about our judges for the holiday contest and said one of them is a French guy. One of the girls in camp heard this, and it inspired her to draw French fries. It is amazing how they can hear one little word, and create a whole art piece out of it.

Not only do they love to share stories, but they love to ask questions. They are always eager to learn more, and they come up with some really great questions. Questions typically stem from one of their friends art pieces, and them wanting to learn more about it, but they also ask anything. Camp is a safe place for them to express themselves, and be curious, and we are always here to help. A simple google search is often all it takes to answer their questions, and the kids find it interesting being able to look at multiple pictures of something they might have never seen before. Not only is camp a place to be creative, but it is a place to learn as well.
