The Blue Glue

Though not all of our camp kids’ creations come with a story, many of them do. It’s likely you’ve seen many bright and colorful artworks from our Creative Camp kids as well as their experimental futuristic inventions or deeply reflective poetry. Sometimes they create for the sake of getting their hands busy with different materials. Other times, the kids create with the purpose of sharing something more specific.

As they discuss each others’ creations, our camp kids are encouraged to look closely at the details. A glob of blue glue or a tiny hamster lego standing in front of a robot will tell you more than you might think. By observing the details and asking each other “Why?”, the kids start to consider how those details could play a more important role in the bigger picture. As they slowly uncover why the glob of glue is there or why the tiny hamster lego is standing in front of a robot , the kids are challenged to recall a step-by-step account of their own process and to communicate it clearly with others. The kids are fascinated by every detail that is revealed and are often so inspired by their peers that they will grab materials and give each other step-by-step tutorials.

Sharing the details of the beginning, middle and end of their processes encourages the kids to not only think critically but also to empathize more with one another’s creative perspectives especially since we all have different strengths and weaknesses. Can you spot the glob of blue glue? What about the tiny hamster? And can you observe enough details to tell me what role they play in the bigger picture?
