Past and Present

When we are feeling a lack of inspiration from what we see in front of us, our kids are able to find some by digging through history. This week alone, we visited artists from the 1500s of Korea as well as the 1800s of France.

Shin Saimdang of Korea was an artist, poet, and calligrapher whose legacy remains as a pillar in the country’s present culture. Cassidy and Coco both found inspiration from this artist as they painted their own image of flora and fauna of the wild. With organic, undulating lines, they mimicked the style of Shin’s centuries old paintings as well.

Yuto and his classmates found inspiration from the notorious Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh who lived in France for the majority of his life. We spoke of his short paint strokes which are so visible in all of his paintings, and took note of his loving relationship with his older brother who supported him through both highs and lows.

Although we may never experience a life like that of these cultural icons, but we can still find inspiration from their passions, challenges, and successes in the lives they led.

Which cultural icons give you inspiration?

Paper Birds

Artist Diana Beltran Herrera uses paper scraps to make models of wildlife animals in their truest forms. Create your own bird using paper scraps!

Teeny TIny

Artist Naoki Onogawa made a tiny crane out of only paper. Many of our campers love to share teeny tiny objects. This time, imagine you are also tiny. What is the tiniest thing you can make?
